Adaptive Riders
All adaptive riders must complete "Step 1: ALL ADAPTIVE RIDERS". If you are competing in the race, you also need to complete "Step 2: RACE Registration".
Volunteer
We are looking for mountain bikers (who own their own bike) to join us in supporting adaptive riders coming from all over the Southeast. These will be four days packed with fun and riding.
If this is your first time volunteering with us, please sign up for the new volunteer training on Saturday morning.
As an On Bike Support Rider Volunteer, you will be teamed up with an adaptive rider to provide support during their ride. Ride Kanuga is a downhill specific bike park. Volunteers will ride High Rocks Climb Trail multiple times during training & race day (2 miles, 524 ft elevation gain). On Bike Support riders should have regular mountain bike experience and be confident riding technical trails.
Off Bike Volunteers will assist with the check in table, registration, swag bags, food support, etc
Adaptive Bike Rental
Catalyst will have a limited number of Adaptive Mountain Bikes available for rent. $150 rental fee for all four days. Fitting will take place on Friday Afternoon & Saturday Morning. These bikes will be stored for you in the Catalyst trailer & transported to the Friday afternoon Oskar Blues Ride & the Monday Dupont State Forest group ride (Catalyst CANNOT provide bike transportation to the Ecusta Greenway Ride). We ask that these rentals be saved for those who do not have their own adaptive bikes & wish to join.
Ride & Terrain Description
Intermediate Friendly Rides
Friday's greenway ride from Oscar Blues will feature paved & unpaved greenway through Brevard, NC and into Pisgah National Forest. It will be approximately 10 miles in length, with an optional advanced trail ride add on if timing allows. HERE are some route details
Saturday morning at Ride Kanuga will feature a morning skills session. This will be led by a BICP aMTB instructor, and will be a great opportunity for riders to hone their skills. The skills session will primarily take place in a coned parking lot area, with some practice in the close by skills park.
Sunday Afternoon will feature a ride on the brand new Ecusta Trail greenway. This will be an estimated 11 mile ride on paved greenway. The ride will leave from Trailside Brewing, which has a gravel parking lot.
Monday will be at Dupont State Forest. This trail system offers trails for all abilities. Whether it is long gravel roads, sweeping singletrack, or technical descents, we can find it all. Estimated mileage will be 5-10 miles depending on which group you join
Ride Kanuga Terrain & Race Run
So, what do we mean when Registration says "Advanced Riders Only". This phrasing is used to capture your attention! We want you to pay close attention to the below information.
Saturday & Sunday EOSJ rides are focused around the Adaptive Race at Ride Kanuga Bike Park. The terrain we will encounter includes extended climbing, fast downhills featuring machine built berms, natural erosion lines, and rocky technical descents. The route will feature primarily aMTB Blue & aMTB Black terrain, defined by KASA Trail Standards shown below
HERE is a detailed link and picture of the "ESTIMATED" elevation profile you will encounter on the Sunday morning race route. Minor route changes may occur before EOSJ weekend. The route will include TWO untimed climbing transfer stages, and TWO timed downhill stages. At least one of the race runs will be down Evergreen Trail, the second stage will be on terrain similar to this clip from GNCC trail. We will attempt to get adaptive video footage posted before the EOSJ.
In general, we recommend that riders participating in the Ride Kanuga practice days & adaptive race have 10+ hours of adaptive riding experience on the bike you will be using, and are confident on aMTB blue trails
