Great Smoky Mountains Adaptive Program Days

Overnight Backcountry Camping

Join a ranger for an interpretive hike to a backcountry camping site in the gorgeous Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Enjoy dinner (and s'mores) around the campfire and spend the night in nature. In the morning, we will eat breakfast together before hiking out.

The hike in is an intermediate level trail including roots/rocks and hills. Bring your own hiking chair or borrow one for the day (GRIT Freedom Chairs are available on a limited, first come first serve basis.)

Don't have your own camping equipment? No problem! You can borrow a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad or cot. We will have volunteers to carry equipment in and help set up.

Please Note: This is a primitive camping experience. There will be a private, accessible commode at the campsite but there is NOT running water or flush toilets.

Date: Saturday June 8th- Sunday June 9th, 2024

Time: 10am Saturday June 8th to 2pm Sunday June 9th

Location: Begin at Abrams Creek Campground, hiking Cooper Road Trail to Campsite #1

6537 Abrams Creek Road, Tallassee, TN 37878

Cost: Free for participants and one companion (space is limited at the campsite, so only one companion may attend)

Eligibility requirements: Due to the nature of being in the backcountry, this trip is not suitable for everyone. Participants must meet all eligibility requirements to attend. These include:

  • Hike one mile on uneven terrain with minimal assistance, using adaptive equipment/mobility devices as needed (we will take plenty of breaks along the way)

  • Manage all medications and medical needs independently, or with the help of a companion

  • Manage bathroom needs independently, or with the help of a companion (a portable commode will be available at the campsite)

  • Communicate your needs to support staff and volunteers

Please use the button below to register. If you have any questions please contact us.

Volunteers are needed to help hikers navigate the trail as well as assist with carrying gear into/out of the campsite and set up/break down camp. Volunteers can come for one or both days.
